Rockwell – Somebody’s Watching Me

Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me

American singer-songwriter Rockwell turned everyday suspicion into a memorable pop classic with Somebody’s Watching Me, a synth-funk recording that explores paranoia, fear and the uncomfortable feeling of being constantly observed.

Built around a catchy synthesizer bassline, electronic drums, keyboards and rhythmic guitar, Somebody’s Watching Me combines funky production with an eerie atmosphere. Rockwell’s expressive vocals bring the lyrics to life, while Michael Jackson’s recognisable backing vocals add extra character to the chorus. Jermaine Jackson also contributes backing vocals.

The single was released in December 1983 through Motown Records and became the lead track from Rockwell’s self-titled debut album, released in 1984. Rockwell co-produced the recording with Curtis Anthony Nolen, who also contributed to its arrangement.

One of the song’s most recognisable features is its chorus, where the repeated fear of being watched contrasts with the upbeat instrumental arrangement. This unusual combination of catchy pop rhythms and unsettling subject matter gives the recording its lasting identity.

Decades after its release, the track remains a popular choice for Halloween playlists and retro music collections. Its memorable chorus, distinctive production and mysterious theme continue to attract listeners who enjoy classic 1980s pop and funk.
