Malian kora master Toumani Diabaté reunites with his sons Sidiki, Balla and Ahmed on **Mande**, a beautiful musical tribute to family heritage, tradition and the enduring identity of West African culture.
The recording brings together four accomplished kora players, creating an ensemble built around the distinctive sound of the 21-string West African harp. Its arrangement also incorporates Western harmonies and electric guitar, giving the traditional musical foundation a broader contemporary character.
The track is featured on Héritage, Toumani Diabaté’s final album, scheduled for release on January 22, 2027, through Etoile Audio and Nonesuch Records. Recorded at the family’s home in Bamako before Toumani’s passing in July 2024, the project fulfils his dream of making music together with his three sons.
One particularly meaningful detail is the song’s connection to Mande history. It incorporates elements of Mali’s national anthem and references the traditional piece “Lamban,” celebrating the heritage of the Mande people and the generations of musicians who have preserved their culture.
For listeners interested in traditional African instruments, world music and cultural storytelling, this recording deserves attention. Beyond its musical arrangement, it carries a powerful message about family, artistic inheritance and keeping cultural traditions alive.
